Call for Papers: Continental Symposium on Educational Research in Africa

The KIX Africa 19 and the KIX Africa 21 Hubs are pleased to announce the launch of a call for papers for the upcoming 2nd GPE KIX Continental Symposium on Educational Research in Africa. The symposium, titled “Strengthening Data Generation and Analysis for Resilient, Inclusive, and Better Performing Education Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa”, will take place from October 3 - 5, 2023. The location will be announced shortly. The KIX Continental Research Symposium will provide an opportunity for participants to share findings from their respective work in GPE partner countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

The symposium will focus on research about data practices for resilient, inclusive and better-performing education systems in the KIX Africa 19 and KIX Africa 21 Hub regions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Paper submissions are welcome on various topics, especially research/experiences on:

  • Creating robust data systems for policy and for monitoring and evaluation;
  • Building capacity in using education system data;
  • Understanding emerging trends and technologies including artificial intelligence and predictive analytics;
  • Ensuring resilience in data practices for education in emergencies and other challenges;
  • Ensuring data protection and privacy, including legal aspects on the use of data;
  • Understanding or demonstrating the value of quantitative or qualitative data to inform policy, including, among others, household surveys, student assessments, beneficiary assessments, evaluations, labour market data, tracer and employer data, and data on the political economy of reforms;
  • Utilizing qualitative and quantitative data on different types of schools (e.g., public, private, faith-based).

Candidates from universities, research institutions, governments, civil society organizations, local education groups, and KIX global grantees in the countries of the KIX Africa 19 and KIX Africa 21 Hubs are invited to submit papers for presentations by July 31, 2023, via e-mail to both kix.iicba@unesco.org and programmekix@francophonie.org. Submission of full papers is encouraged, but abstracts will also be considered. Applicants will be notified if their paper has been selected by August 31, 2023. Scholarships will be awarded on a needs-based and competitive basis to selected researchers from KIX countries to be able to attend the symposium.
