Mathematics instructional practice improvement project Kenya
Project Abstract
The Mathematics Instructional Practice Improvement Project (MIPIP) has been tested in Kakamega county, Kenya, to bridge the gaps in mathematics teaching and learning that exist. The MIPIP helps teachers use student learning data to inform how they tailor their pedagogical and inclusive practices to support mathematics outcomes. It facilitates professional learning communities in which teachers can learn from one another, based in action/reflection cycles, and it promotes the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) for both mathematics instruction and teachers’ networking.
This project aims to adapt, contextualize, and scale the innovation, specifically targeting secondary school teachers and learners in Kenya. It explores effective strategies for improving data use to improve education practices and mathematics learning outcomes, with a focus on gender-responsive teaching practices to promote equity and inclusivity in mathematics education. It also aims to establish a Knowledge Network of Mathematics Educators (KNME) to share insights for improving instructional practices. It is also developing a framework for data-driven professional development and the adoption of ICTs in mathematics instruction in Kenyan secondary schools.
