Project Abstract

Africa faces development challenges that impact multiple sectors. Major shocks and stressors have adversely impacted community livelihoods and service delivery. The education sector is one of the most prone to system-level shocks as was revealed especially by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the growing disruptions to education systems and the increasing emphasis on strengthening their resilience, there is limited evidence about the status of education system resilience on the African continent and what it means in theory and practice.

As part of the GPE KIX Observatory on Education System Resilience initiative, the Africa Regional Education Systems Resilience Observatory (ARESRO) project examines education system resilience in selected countries in Africa by exploring its meanings and practices and potential future disruptions. More specifically, the project assesses existing initiatives and innovations that address education system resilience and the extent to which they consider the needs of vulnerable groups. It also explores future shocks, stressors, and risks affecting education systems.
