Project Abstract

Education systems in Latin America and the Caribbean face significant challenges such as education inequities, political and economic instability, migration, and climate change. These challenges have implications for the resilience of education systems and their ability to respond to different disruptions. There has been a growing emphasis on education system resilience, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, there is a lack of consolidated evidence and research on how to build resilient education systems capable of addressing different challenges and disruptions while considering the needs of most vulnerable groups. This knowledge gap hinders decision-making and policy development to ensure educational systems can respond and adapt to crises and disruptions.

As part of the GPE KIX Observatory on Education System Resilience initiative, this project examines education system resilience in selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Specifically, using a mixed methods approach, it explores the meanings and practices of education system resilience, the extent to which they consider the needs of vulnerable groups, and potential future disruptions beyond those already known. The project aims to mobilize the generated evidence among relevant stakeholders to contribute to improving resilience and preparedness of education systems in the region.
