From 21 – 22 January 2025, UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta organized the first Accountability for Gender Equality in Education (AGEE) Project National Advisory Group (NAG) and Workshop, a joint endeavor between University of College London (UCL) and UNESCO supported by the Global Partnership for Education’s Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX).

The project aims to redefine how gender equality in and through education is measured and analyzed using the AGEE Framework— an evaluation tool that supports thinking beyond basic gender parity indicators in education. It does this by adopting a more comprehensive and participatory approach to data collection, usage, and advocacy.

The two-day meeting and workshop served as a platform for meaningful participation among governments, researchers, academics, civil society representatives to learn about AGEE and exchange their experiences and expertise in gender equality and education. Representatives from Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Center for Education Policy and Studies, Indonesia Education Monitoring Network, Indonesia Statistics Office, KAPAL Perempuan Institute, Youth Advocate for Education, Center for Gender Studies – University of Indonesia, and SMERU Research Institute participated in the first NAG meeting and workshop.

Guided by the AGEE Framework, participants collaboratively discussed potential indicators of gender equality in and through education in Indonesia across the six AGEE domains, comprising resources, values, participation, opportunities, knowledge understanding and skills, and outcomes. The participatory discussion brought to the fore country specific issues such as the prevalence of child marriage which influences adolescent girls’ and boys’ participation in school and their learning. Participants also shared that through the AGEE Framework, they identified  possible AGEE national indicators and had rich discussions on gender and education data from various perspectives.

This workshop is part of the AGEE workshop series, aimed to strengthen development of AGEE National Dashboards in Indonesia.
