The Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX) is launching the GPE KIX Observatory on Education System Resilience initiative. The main objective of the initiative is for GPE partner countries to have and use research and evidence to make their education systems more resilient and better prepared for future disruptions.

GPE KIX selected implementing partners through its recent call for proposals to run six regional observatories: one in Latin America and the Caribbean, one in East, West, Central, and Southern Africa, and four in Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.

GPE KIX is launching this initiative amid increased emphasis on building education system resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the growing expectation of diverse disruptions to education systems in the years ahead, related to climate change, globalization, demographic changes, new and protracted political conflicts, displaced populations, new education technology, and artificial intelligence.

Our scoping study has highlighted the lack of consensus around what education system resilience means in theory and practice. In many low-and middle-income countries, education system resilience practices tend to focus on crises and emergencies, especially natural disasters and conflict, and efforts at resilience are often overshadowed by pressing challenges in the present.

In light of this, the GPE KIX Observatory initiative on education system resilience aims to examine the meanings and practices of education system resilience and potential future disruptions to education systems in GPE partner countries.  The explorations of potential future disruptions to education systems will draw on elements of strategic foresight.

The initiative builds on the GPE KIX COVID-19 Observatory, which focused on collecting, synthesizing and sharing evidence about education-related policy and practice responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in GPE partner countries in Africa.

More information about the regional observatories can be found below, with additional updates on their activities to follow:
