Mathematics Instructional Practice Improvement Project Champions Teacher Training in Kenya

On February 1, mathematics teachers from selected schools in Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties in Kenya participated in the Mathematics Instructional Practice Improvement (MIPI) Project Sensitization Workshop at Kibabii University. 

MIPI is an ongoing initiative to improve data-driven instructional practices and student learning outcomes in mathematics. This GPE KIX project is led by Professor Martin Wanjala, the Principal Investigator and an Associate Professor of Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Media, at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). He is supported by a team from Kibabii University including Prof. Julius Maiyo, Dr. Robert Kati, Dr. Duncan Wasike, and Dr. Roselida Maroko and Joseph Bii from the University of Kabianga. 

Officially inaugurating the workshop, Kibabii University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo  commended the initiative reiterating its impact on improving mathematics education for Kenyan learners.

“We are proud that this initiative will be a game changer for our teachers, empowering them to assist  learners to develop necessary numeracy skills. It aligns well with the changing world as it integrates and leverages technology, a key component in our national aspiration to become a digital economy” he added.

The workshop was also attended by  Mr. Bartholomew Lumbasi,  Director of Policy and Partnerships, Ministry of Education, quality assurance officers from West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties and an official from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

MIPI is supported by the Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange, a joint endeavour with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.
