The GPE KIX EMAP Hub hosted its 20th webinar on 31st July 2024. The event was organised in partnership with the GPE KIX Research on Scaling the Impact of Innovations in Education (ROSIE) project, facilitated by the Millions Learning project at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings. The webinar focused on the topic of scaling impact in education – sharing key insights and lessons learned – and attracted over 240 participants from more than 60 countries.

Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Professor of Comparative and International Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the KIX EMAP Principle Researcher, opened the event with introductory remarks.

Next, Molly Curtiss Wyss (Center for Universal Education, Brookings) presented findings from eight years of research conducted by Millions Learning on scaling. This included addressing questions such as why to address scaling, how to define it, the significance of scaling for impact, and the importance of studying how scaling happens. Brad Olsen (Center for Universal Education, Brookings) then provided an overview of the project and shared key themes emerging from ROSIE, such as the role of scaling champions, and the importance of conducting research to inform scaling strategies and including equity considerations when scaling. Each presentation provided an opportunity to address questions and reflections from the audience.

Following the presentations, the session featured a panel discussion with Gembo Tshering (GPE KIX Research Project Enhancing Data Utilization and Decision-Making in Bhutan’s Education System: Motherboard Integrated Education Monitoring and Information System) and Binayak Krishna Thapa (GPE KIX Project Promoting Gender quality and Social Inclusion in Schools Building on What Children Value and Aspire to Do and Be), who reflected on their approaches to scaling impact. The panellists shared examples of how they engage with scaling champions, prioritise equity in their work, and conduct research to inform their scaling strategies.

Finally, Marina Dreux Frotté, KIX EMAP Education Policy, Evaluation, and Learning Lead concluded the event highlighting the upcoming opportunities and collaboration on this topic.
