It has been 10 months since the KIX Africa 19 hub began its work as a knowledge sharing platform for 18 member countries in East, West and Southern Africa. In 2020, the hub Secretariat focused on establishing a relationship with the member countries, understanding their goals for the collaboration, and creating a platform for country representatives and experts to exchange their experiences in addressing equity, quality, and inclusivity in education.
The hub, led by the UNESCO’s Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), is about to launch its 2021 strategy that will guide ongoing engagements with its 18 member countries. The strategy is centered on strengthening partnerships between the countries to promote capacity building and ongoing knowledge sharing on educational policies and innovations.
The country engagement strategy and 2021 detailed work plan has been designed in light of lessons learned from the KIX Africa 19 hub’s first year in action, as well as extensive data gathered on member countries’ priorities, policies, and challenges. This includes an in-depth country mapping and analysis, a baseline assessment, and an ICT needs assessment.
As described in the strategy and the work plan for 2021, the Hub Secretariat’s focus is capacity building and surfacing and sharing knowledge on existing educational innovations and sector planning and implementation to address the challenge of teaching and learning in the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 contexts. The hub’s strategy towards this is through strengthening partnerships between countries by establishing communities of practice and clustering countries along the various sub-thematic areas.
The overall outcome of the strategy is sustainability and empowerment for hub member countries through collaboration while promoting hub visibility and relevance.
The work of the KIX Africa 19 hub is guided by a fundamental belief in: 1) Country-led and country-centered dialogue, ideation, and innovation; 2) Trusting relationships and partnerships that transcend national borders; and 3) The essential role of evidence in decision-making and design. These three principles are at the core of the hub.
