Honduras marks completion of the International Diploma Program in Competency-Based Education
The Honduran Secretariat of Education (SEDUC) and the KIX LAC Hub celebrated the completion of the International Diploma Program in Competency-Based Education, developed by the University of Talca in Chile. The KIX LAC Hub is an initiative driven by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the International Development Research Center (IDRC) in Canada, and led in Latin America and the Caribbean by SUMMA and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
Launched in August 2025, the program was designed to update and strengthen the capacities of Honduran professionals and teachers to support the implementation of competency-based educational solutions. Its main objectives included understanding the relationships between science, technology, society and education; developing curricular and methodological proposals; and designing assessment strategies aimed at the continuous improvement of learning.
Willmer Andrade, director of basic education at SEDUC and a participant in the program, stressed that the diploma program was much more than a series of academic sessions. “It was a space for analysis, reflection, sharing experiences, and collective construction, where all of us who participated as technical staff from the Secretariat of Education, along with our teaching colleagues […] had the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the competency-based approach. This approach has now become a cornerstone that will help us move toward adopting the STEAM approach,” he said.
This joint experience involving Honduras, the University of Talca and the KIX LAC Hub demonstrates the potential of collaboration between countries and institutions to respond to shared education challenges, strengthen technical capacities, and promote sustainable educational improvement processes. It also reaffirms SEDUC's commitment to strengthening its technical teams and to developing evidence-based education policies and practices aimed at improving learning for children and young people.
