Round Table: The issue of entry and retention in the teaching profession in basic education

The recent study carried out by the KIX Africa 21 Hub has identified the priorities put forward by the 21 partner countries of West Africa, Central Africa and the Indian Ocean. Four priority themes were identified, the first of which concerns initial and continuing teacher training, which goes hand in hand with capacity building for all education sector personnel.

The question now is: What are the fundamental knowledge and skills that need to be addressed in teacher education in the 21st century to ensure quality education? This question must be accompanied by a reflection on the relevance of curricula in order to be more in line with society’s needs in terms of technological development, employability and citizenship.

This information session will discussed at the next round table entitled, “The issue of entry and retention in the teaching profession in basic education,” on October 5, 2021, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. GMT. The KIX Africa 21 Hub invites all stakeholders in education to take part in this event. English interpretation will be available for our partners.

The objectives of this event are:

  • To share country experiences on the conditions of entry into the teaching profession at the elementary/primary and junior high school levels;
  • To discuss the competencies targeted by the initial training (preparation for the profession at the elementary and junior high school levels);
  • To discuss the systems in place in the countries for professional integration or support of newly qualified teachers, including those entering the profession in general;
  • To share country experiences on continuing education and teacher retention policies.
