Community of Practice in teacher development strengthening

The Global Partnership for Education’s Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (GPE KIX) Africa 19 Hub is delighted to announce the restart of the Community of Practice (CoP) in Teacher Education and Development Strengthening in Sub-Saharan Africa, after a richly engaging first module last year.

What is the CoP? 

This CoP is a virtual peer learning space for education policy actors, teacher representatives and select school leaders to share and discuss good, evidence-based policies and practices in teacher professional development and in-service education in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Through a series of live virtual workshops and an applied learning tasks, participants will  learn how to run stronger teacher development programs in their own countries and workplaces.

Who are the organizers? 

UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), the Global Partnership for Education’s Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) Africa 19 Hub (a joint endeavor with the International Development and Research Centre of Canada, IDRC), the European Union's Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (EU-RTIA), the Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) and the African Union.

Who is this for? 

Policy actors from ministries of education (especially from teacher departments), staff from teacher councils and teacher commissions, teacher educators and education researchers from teacher colleges, and school leaders implementing continuing professional development (CPD) reforms in sub-Saharan Africa.

What is the time commitment? 

This CoP will meet 10 times every other Wednesday from mid-August to mid-December 2026, on the dates of August 19, September 2, September 16, September 30, October 14, October 28, November 11, November 25, December 9 and December 16 (dates are subject to change). 

The CoP will meet from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. East Africa Time (UTC +3). Approximately 3 hours of individually paced work are encouraged each month to apply your learning. 

Participants who fully attend 8 of the 10 sessions and complete the main assignment will earn certificates.

Register by August 14, 2026. Accepted participants will be notified by August 16, in advance of the first session on August 19.
