Advancing Inclusive Curriculum in Kenya and Lesotho through KIX19 Hub
From 15th to 19th September 2025, the Ministries of Education of Kenya and Lesotho, with support from UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office through the KIX-19 Hub, will convene in Naivasha, Kenya, for a regional technical workshop on inclusive curriculum reform. This milestone marks the first concrete activity under a joint roadmap developed by the two governments in August 2024 to strengthen inclusive education systems in Lesotho.
The collaboration builds on a South-South exchange process that began in 2023, when officials from the Lesotho Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) visited Kenya to learn from the country’s inclusive education practices. This was followed by a reciprocal mission to Maseru, where Kenyan officials explored Lesotho’s progress and challenges in advancing inclusive education.
These exchanges led to the development of a joint roadmap that identified priority areas for cooperation. Among them, curriculum and assessment reform was highlighted as critical, given that Lesotho is currently undertaking a curriculum review. Integrating a disability-inclusive perspective at this stage will ensure that the learning needs of all children, including those with disabilities, are fully taken into account.
The Naivasha workshop will bring together technical teams from both Ministries to:
Review Lesotho’s existing curriculum through a disability-inclusive lens.
Identify gaps and opportunities to strengthen inclusion.
Develop recommendations and training resources to support Lesotho’s ongoing curriculum reform process.
This collaboration underscores how South-South learning and partnership can drive systemic change. By drawing on Kenya’s expertise and aligning with Lesotho’s reform priorities, the initiative contributes to the broader regional agenda of ensuring that no child is left behind in education.
